You will hear of the hardships faced by the convicts and their guards, when arriving on an uninhabited Island in 1788, just 6 weeks after Australia was settled. Hear how they survived and why the settlement was abandoned a mere 26 years later. You will walk in the footsteps of the convicts and military during the second settlement and understand why they called it “Hell on Earth”.

We took an hour and a half tour called "World Heritage History Tour" which mainly focused on the history of the third penal settlement. It was an excellent introduction as it enabled us later, when travelling independently, to recognise and to understand some of the characteristics of a penal settlement. We found it very informative and interesting.
We were part of the "FUNSTARS Fun over 50 holiday's group with Arcadia". We attended a few tours with AATA Orn Tours. Our driver was Rick; he was absolutely awesome! Rick went above and beyond on each stop of interest and was always professional, knowledgeable, friendly and helpful assisting on and off the bus. So happy to have met Rick on this tour. Much appreciated, we will be back!

Banks
Our currency is the Australian Dollar and the Commonwealth Bank is located in the heart of Burnt Pine in Taylors Road. The bank also has full ATM facilities. Most retailers accept Mastercard and Visa, and have Eftpos facilites. Remember to keep some cash for the Farmers Markets on Saturday and the Arts & Craft Markets on Sunday.
Swimming Beaches
Emily Bay and Slaughter Bay are the two safest swimming beaches on the Island, as they are protected by the reef. They are also the perfect locations for snorkelling. Even in winter the water temperature rarely drops below 18 degrees.
