Getting Around the Island
Norfolk Island has no public transport and is quite hilly, so a hire car is a must. All you need is a valid Australian or New Zealand open licence. Most road rules are the same as Australia, cows have right of way on our roads, and we wave to all on coming vehicles. The Speed limit outside Burnt Pine is 50km/h, 40km/h inside Burnt Pine and 30km/h in the school zone and on the Kingston foreshore. There is a private taxi on the Island which can be prebooked.
Keeping in Touch
Although Australian and New Zealand mobile phones do not work on the Island, it is simple and easy to keep in touch with family and friends. Norfolk Telecom have a tourist sim available from from Customer Care which includes data, and many clubs have free wifi.
Language
Whilst the predominant language is English, you will hear many Islanders speaking Norf’k. This is a mixture of Old English and Tahitian and is taught in our schools today. Why not consider taking a language class to find out more about this fascinating language.
Banks
Our currency is the Australian Dollar and the Commonwealth Bank is located in the heart of Burnt Pine in Taylors Road. The bank also has full ATM facilities. Most retailers accept Mastercard and Visa, and have Eftpos facilites. Remember to keep some cash for the Farmers Markets on Saturday and the Arts & Craft Markets on Sunday.
Swimming Beaches
Emily Bay and Slaughter Bay are the two safest swimming beaches on the Island, as they are protected by the reef. They are also the perfect locations for snorkelling. Even in winter the water temperature rarely drops below 18 degrees.
